God Has Designed You To Live Spiritually

The Holiness of the Here and Now – Part 8

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

–1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV)

Nothing more is necessary than to breath, to sleep, and to eat. Yet nothing is simpler, either. Love and faithfulness are no less necessary in the spiritual world. It must be, therefore, that the difficulty in acquiring them is not as great as it is made out to be.

–Jean Pierre de Caussade

The most essential activities of physical life are also the ones that come naturally. We eat, we breathe, we sleep. We are so good at these things that we only take notice when something goes wrong. Now, we should not take these things for granted, but neither should we be surprised at how easily they come to us. God has designed us as physical beings in a physical world.

Yet he has also designed us as spiritual beings, with the capacity to live in a spiritual world. And he did so from the beginning; this was not an afterthought. We have been spiritually designed to commune with God. And what is the water and oxygen of this fellowship? What are the basics of spiritual life? In the above quote, Jean Pierre de Caussade identifies two: love and faithfulness. He then reasons that God must have made these as accessible as they are necessary. Physically, we live in a world where air surrounds us, and water falls on us. Spiritually, nothing is closer to us than to love God and be faithful to him.

The apostle Paul tells us to eat and drink to the glory of God. If we look with our physical eyes, seeking the glory of the activity, we will overlook this command. Eating and drinking seem mundane, not glorious. But as we come to understand it, we learn that we can do the physical things spiritually, and the common things gloriously.

The opportunity to glorify God is never lacking. A life of holiness and deep spirituality is in front of you and all around you.
