The Divine Activity Present in All Things

The Holiness of the Here and Now – Part 9

For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

–Romans 1:20-21 (ESV)

How foolish it is to refuse to breathe in the air that surrounds us, to be in the open country yet find no place to stand, to be in the midst of a flood yet find no water. How foolish it is not to know God, not to taste him, not to touch his activity, which is already present in all things!

–Jean Pierre de Caussade

Another way to think about God present in the world is through his activity. He is not only present in miracles, when he works outside the laws of nature, but also present in nature as it normally operates. This is not pantheism, or any such idea that identifies the universe itself as God. No, God is a personal being, separate and above all things. As the apostle Paul has said, he is the “only Sovereign…who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see” (1 Timothy 6:15-16).

But his activity, that’s another story. His activity is everywhere, and it is inescapable. We simply need to realize that all power is God’s power, and all life is his life. You can live your life in denial of him, but you can only live the life he gives you. There is no other. You can do the things he hates, but only with the power he gives you. This is not hard to understand, but it is hard to accept—hard to come to terms with.

The way of abandonment is about coming to terms with the everywhere, always, all-powerful God. The result is peace—a peace not achieved by the mind or the intellect, but exercised by the will and the heart.
