Every Experience is an Experience of God

The Holiness of the Here and Now – Part 20

And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for “In him we live and move and have our being”; as even some of your own poets have said, “For we are indeed his offspring.”

–Acts 17:26-28 (ESV)

Do not ask me the secret of finding this treasure. There is no secret. This treasure—it is everywhere. It is available to us everywhere, all the time. Friend and enemy alike pour it out for us into both hands. They make it flow into all the faculties of our bodies and souls, straight to the center of our hearts. If we open our mouths, they will be filled. The divine activity floods the universe. It permeates all creatures. It floats above them. Wherever they are, it is there. It leads them; it accompanies them; it follows them. There is nothing left for them to do but to be carried on its waves.

–Jean Pierre de Caussade

You decide for yourself, moment by moment, whether you experience more of God or less. Your decision is made in the way you define the word “experience,” and how you choose to classify various experiences, with their different levels of awareness and different ways of sensing his presence.

But if God is truly everywhere, and gives life to us (that is, he gives us all the life we have, all the time), then every experience is an experience of God, of one kind or another. Why should you rate the experiences by your own preference? Why not choose to love the will of God however you experience it at the moment? If you have a deep spiritual experience of God, thank him for it. If you want such an experience, ask him for it. But have equal appreciation for whatever kind of experience of God the present moment gives you.
