The Holiness of the Here and Now – Part 87
“What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.”
–Matthew 10:27 (ESV)
What God dictates to the heart, the heart repeats, as his faithful echo, to the rest of your being.
–Jean Pierre de Caussade
When the pure intention of your heart is to give your existence completely over to God, this reverberates throughout the rest of your life. It affects your thought process and all your reasoning. It changes your priorities and your perspective. While the actual things you do in a day may not have changed, there will be a greatness about the way you do them.
You can expect to be directed by God. This can come from a small seed: a quiet word spoken to the heart. Or maybe it will be less than a word. Maybe it will be more like an impression, an image, an idea not yet articulated. Whatever it is, if it is from God, communicated to a pure heart, it will be repeated to the rest of your being. And it will be amplified.
This process reminds us about how Jesus commanded his disciples to proclaim the gospel. They were to make it open to the public, loud and clear with nothing hidden. They were to do this even with a word that began as a whisper in the dark, so to speak.
But sometimes, something goes wrong between the whisper and the proclamation. Perhaps you have witnessed this: God whispers a vision or idea into someone’s heart, but before it is implemented, it passes through a filter of pride, self-interest, and carnal ambition. The vision comes to pass in the real world, but it is not exactly right. It is not a faithful echo of the God’s true intention.
Remove such filters from your heart. Better yet, give yourself over to God and allow him to remove them however he sees fit to do so. Then your heart will become a faithful echo, repeating what it hears to the rest of your being.
