You Have Been Given the Power To Be Satisfied

The Holiness of the Here and Now – Part 94

Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

–John 4:13-14 (ESV)

If we are thirsty, we must drink. We must put down our books about drinking, and we must drink. Intellectual curiosity at this point will only increase our actual thirst. Likewise, when we are thirsty for holiness, intellectual curiosity can only push it further away. We must set aside speculation, and we must simply drink in everything that the order of God sets before us, both to do and to suffer. This is what is best for us; this is what is most holy and divine: whatever happens to us at each moment, by the order of God.

–Jean Pierre de Caussade

The present moment has the power both to sanctify and to satisfy. Its power to sanctify comes by virtue of the divine order. God has chosen to sanctify you in the midst of your real life, and he can use whatever happens to you as a tool to that end. The tool has no power, in itself, to sanctify. The power comes from the God who uses the tool.

Likewise, the present moment has no power to satisfy you outside of the power that Jesus has given you: the power to be satisfied. To “never be thirsty again” is the promise that Jesus holds out to those who will drink his water. This is because you will have the source of satisfaction within you. The water is with you wherever you go. But still, you must drink. The Spirit comes from within and satisfies you, so that you can then be satisfied with what the Spirit is doing around you. The active presence of God connects your inward life with your outward circumstances.
